Final essay
English 101 has been a learning experience
for me. My professor Jason Smith has given
us a book to read. This book is called “Fast
Food Nation.” I have learned many facts about foods
through this book. Professor Smith has
helped me expand my writing skills by having his class
write blog entries. Professor Smith has
certainly helped me in knowing what it means to be a
writer, my weaknesses and how to improve
my writing skills. This class improved my writing
skills.
I
have learned a lot of facts about food through this class. As I mentioned
before the book
my classmates and I were reading “Fast
Food Nation” has taught me how fast foods are
produced. I stopped eating fast food a
year ago due to my health but, I never looked into what
these fast food items are made of. This
book has taught me that fast food companies take
shortcuts in producing there foods. They
purchase there food from factory farms. These farms
inject their animals with antibiotics
and hormones. They spray chemicals on their vegetables. A
large percentage of their food is frozen
and then deep fried. This book has also taught me about
the history of fast food, where it
originated from, workers, how fast food companies became so
popular and expanded. These are a just a
few facts of what I have about food from “Fast Food
Nation.”
I
have learned about culture and writing in Professor Smith’s class. Our class
created
blogs. In These blogs we wrote about the
book as well as our own experiences with foods. From
reading other classmate’s blogs I have learned
about the types of food they eat and cook. The
blogs and essays have helped me with my writing
skills. I love fashion and I am always reading
blogs on fashion. I never knew how to go
about writing one. This class has taught me how to do so. Even though I am will not writing blogs
for the class anymore I can now create a blog for my
interest thank to Professor Smith. The essays
assigned to us have helped me improve my writing
skills. I never knew how to write and
cite in MLA format until I did my research paper. This
research paper has helped me with
research papers for other classes. I have learned about culture
and writing skills in this class.
This
class has opened up my eyes as to what it means to be a writer, my weaknesses,
where to improve, and how it will help me
in the future. In my opinion writing is a form of
expressing yourself. Your thoughts, feelings,
and expanding your knowledge. You add your
personal experiences in your writing and
do research to get more information on what you are
writing about. I started writing in kindergarten
of course. Just kidding I starting writing essays in
middle school in the sixth grade. They
have improved since then but I knew I wasn't a great
writer. Most of my teachers in the previous
years would give me back my paper with either a
“could do better” or “great job.” If there
were corrections to be made I saw them, but I never had
to rewrite it so technically I didn't really
learn from my mistakes. My weaknesses were always I
was not organized with my essay and I had
tons of punctuation problems. I am still working on
that. Professor Smith gives me back all
of my essays with a rubric telling me what I needed to
improve on, with his comments and his
corrections. What helped me was option he gave us to rewrite.
While rewriting these essays I was able
to see where I went wrong and what not to do again. I
learned where to correct my punctuation
mistakes. This class experience has made me confident
into going on to other writing classes. I
have writing experiences from this class and I can look
back at my papers and see what mistakes
not to make. I needed this experience for my future I
am on my way to becoming a social worker.
As I have heard from many grad students there is a
lot of writing to be done. This class
has taught me my weaknesses, helped me improve and taken
me steps closer to my future.
I
couldn’t have been happier with this class and what it has taught me. Learning
about
fast foods something I may have never
looked into. I would have never known about processed foods. Reading other classmates blogs learning
about culture and foods. Most of all improving
my writing skills for the future. Thank
you Professor Smith for helping me improve my writing
skills.
